Original Oil Painting Sold. I try to make my paintings look very natural, free and sketchy. I want them to look quickly-drawn and spontaneous. They are far from it, they take weeks if not months to produce. Here is an insight into how they are done... The board/canvas is prepared with several layers of undercoat and then with several coats of primer. Then a first layer of yellow is massaged in. I let this dry for 3 days then massage another layer in and then another. When this is dry I coat it in Liquin which seals the yellow and brings out the colour. I can then start painting. The Liquin stops the paint sticking so I have to layer it up very slowly, allowing long drying periods between layers. Each image probably has at least 15 layers. I use 9 different tones of paint from black through to white. The black I use is a concoction of black and yellow (the same yellow as is used for the background to balance the colours). The paint smudges very easily and I tend to get finger marks around the canvas whilst I work. Rather than take all of these out and make it too neat, I am careful to leave some of them in which I think adds to the work. I start off by painting the parts that interest me most. My job as an artist is to then not go too far and fill it in. What you leave out is just as important as what you decide to leave in. Overview As you can see I specialise in capturing the female form - subtle, classical nudes in oil, charcoal, graphite and red chalk. Born in Henley, I spent most of my adult life in London, Hong Kong and Dublin. I am now happily settled in Windsor. I abandoned a career in publishing at the age of 40 to follow my lifelong passion - drawing and painting. I trained at a leading art college in London and was then taught by Michael Clark, who knew Francis Bacon very well (and incidentally the only person to draw him in the flesh). My work has been included in the books ‘Images of Women in Art’ and ‘Musings of Miss Yellow’. As well as being a stay-at-home Dad, I now paint from my Windsor studio and run my own life-drawing classes at the Windsor Art Centre. Testimonial “Patrick Palmer is a modern master of figurative art. His post-romantic nudes are not only exquisitely painted, but also dreamy, delicate and suggestive. They only hint at sensuality and evoke fantasy in the subtle and elegant manner that distinguishes art from pornography.” Claudia Moscovici, Co-founder of postromanticism.com and art critic (“Romanticism and Post-romanticism”, Lexington Books, 2007).
